The cost of inaction
When the right choice is not the most urgent
We often meet quality and purchasing managers who want to work more systematically with alternative ingredients – and who already have this on their radar. What stands in the way is rarely a lack of commitment, but a busy everyday life where other tasks take priority.
At the same time, the need for change is rarely prioritised in one place within the company. Approval of new or alternative ingredients typically requires coordination across departments – between purchasing, quality, development and perhaps also commercial considerations.
This dialogue takes place internally within your company, but we are here to support you with advice and input. so that decisions are made on a clear basis.
There’s also a price to pay for not doing anything
It's easy to calculate what it costs to approve a new or alternative ingredient.
It is more difficult to calculate what it costs not to have it ready when the need arises.
We have seen situations like these:
- An urgent approval that delayed production and led to additional testing costs.
- A production shutdown where just one ingredient was missing.
- A delivery challenge that hit because an alternative was not in place.
None of these situations arise intentionally, but when they do, the difference between being prepared and having to find a solution from scratch becomes clear.
- When we see companies being affected, it is rarely because they are unaware of the risk – but because the timing of getting alternatives in place is difficult in a busy everyday life. It is often a matter of all relevant departments being aware of the risks and sharing an understanding of how vulnerable the supply chain can be.

The solution must fit the reality
For many companies, security of supply is about finding solutions that can be implemented without creating extra pressure in a busy everyday life. Often, it is a matter of choosing the best place to start. This may be the products where the risk and significance for the business are greatest.
We contribute with documentation, test support and professional advice. We are also more than happy to participate in dialogues with your teams when it makes sense.
An approach that can be sustained
It is not about approving everything. It is about being able to explain and justify the choices that are made. And about being able to act if something changes.
That is why we help you consider:
- Where are the greatest potential consequences?
- Where is there currently only one solution – and no alternatives?
- What requires the least effort to implement – but has the greatest impact?
The goal is not to do everything - but to do what you choose, while it is still possible to do so without rushing.
As Anastassia Krotova Kildevæld, Account Manager at Procudan, explains:
- The best solutions are those that can be justified strategically and work in everyday life. Then, they will also be rooted across the organisation.
